An excerpt of a letter written to Mr. D. Amico, Albion N.Y., April 23, 1963
My father at age twelve came to America in 1843 with his parents from England.
They knew of a Reed family from their section of England who were living in Hulberton, then name Scio, so they took passage on the Erie Canal for Scio.
The boat captain put them out in the country a mile and one half east of Scio. One of the boys walked to Scio and contacted the Reed family who came for them with a scow drawn by a pair of oxen and took them to their home.
My father's father was a builder. He built a stone house for his family along the canal. He built a number of stone (Medina) houses throughout the area one of which was the late Arthur Phillips home in Hulberton next to the present home of Mrs. Clark Moore.
The stone over the front door carries his name "D.Moore, Builder".
My wife and I attended the 100th anniversary of its building some years ago. It's in perfect condition today.
The John, Frank and Clark Moores of Hulberton, who ran a store along the canal and had quarry interests there, were members of my father's family.
Very truly yours,
David Moore
